For business
A QR code on packaging: why, when a barcode already exists
The barcode is for the till, the QR code is for the person. On packaging it leads to this product’s own page, where you can explain the batch, the contents, how to use it and what to do if something goes wrong.
The three things that matter most
Ingredients and origin, instructions for the exact model, and the ability to send a message after the sale. The last one is the valuable part: the packaging is already printed, but the page behind the code can change tomorrow.
Batch, expiry and recalls
A static code leads to one page for everyone. A dynamic one can be pointed at a batch page — and that is where you post a recall. Keep the batch number printed on the pack as well: a code can be lost, printed text cannot.
The Digital Product Passport
The EU is rolling out the Digital Product Passport: a set of product data reachable through a code. For batteries, textiles and electronics it is becoming a requirement rather than a bonus. If you sell into Europe, plan the QR on the pack now.
