Error correction levels: how much damage a QR survives
A QR code carries backup copies of its own data. The level you pick decides how much of the square can be covered or scratched and still read, and how dense the code becomes.
Four levels, one trade-off
L recovers about 7 % of the code, M about 15 %, Q about 25 % and H about 30 %. Higher levels add more redundancy, so the same link needs more modules, which means smaller dots for the same printed size. There is no free upgrade.
Which level to choose
Use M for clean indoor print at a comfortable size. Move to Q when the code sits on a menu, a table sticker or anything that gets handled. Use H only when you plan to place a logo in the middle or the code will be partly covered by design.
How to check it before printing
Print one copy at the final size and scan it with two phones from the real distance, in the light you expect. Then damage a spare print with a thumb and try again. If it still reads, the level and the size are right.
